The t in “top” has a puff of air after it that the t in “stop” does not have. On the other hand, English speakers pronounce the t sound in the English words “top” and “stop” in slightly different ways. English speakers use those three sounds for making different words. Those three vowel sounds are phonemic for standard English. What does phonemic mean? It refers to the sounds of a language that make a distinction in meaning.įor example, in English the vowel sound in the words “top”, “tape” and “tip” distinguish different words and different meanings. Additionally, the phonemic Koiné is close enough to Modern Greek so that Greek speakers accept it as ‘something Greek’ and ‘non-offensive’, even if not the same dialect. For those coming from a different system, a relatively small change at the beginning of the renewal effort is worthwhile. After such work would the student like to end up feeling like and sounding somewhat Greek? Hopefully. Pronunciation may only become an issue when someone wants to invest the time and energy to become truly fluent in the language, able to think, to listen and to read at normal conversational speeds. Assonance, rhyme, and avoidance of ambiguity become clearer. It provides an additional perspective on word choices by an author. Why Use a Koiné Pronunciation?Ī phonemic Koiné results in a dialect in which the user will appreciate the sounds and writings of the first three Christian centuries in a manner in which the original audiences would have perceived them. ![]() When options were available, the pronunciation should be practical for speakers of English, Spanish, French and German. When in doubt, decisions should fit with the known historical outcome. When options were available, the pronunciation should help students with adapting to other dialects of Greek so as to become a bridge to the whole Greek language. That is, it should reflect the way in which the language sounded in the Roman period. The pronunciation system should, as far as practical, be historical. This means that the pronunciation system should be phonemic. The pronunciation should preserve the same significant sound distinctions that were used in the Roman period. In particular, the focus is on the Koiné Greek of what is historically the Roman period in the land of Israel, 63 BCE to 325 CE. The pronunciation system is primarily intended for persons wishing to learn Koiné Greek, the general Greek dialect used from the third century before the Common Era (BCE) to the fourth century of the Common Era (CE). Principles Governing the Pronunciation in this Course And audio material for an ancient language means that decisions must be made about the kind of pronunciation system to be used. As soon as students set their sights on a higher goal and want to include language learning methodologies that will lead to a fluent control of the language, they must come to grips with the need to include audio and oral material in a program. As long as students only need to write Greek or to look at Greek on a printed page, the pronunciation system is not a very important issue. When a person wants to use living language methods to learn a language, one is required to make some choices about what kind of pronunciation system to use. (These notes are of a technical nature beyond language learning, intended primarily for teachers.) Notes on the Pronunciation System of Koiné Greek ![]() On a totally separate note, based on your recent Deep Purple post and the follow-up conversation, I’ve since bought the expanded versions of In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head (2CD0, Who Do We Think We Are, Burn, Stormbringer, Come Taste The Band (2CD) and Made In Japan. I don’t sell much of my music collection, but every once in a while if something is valuable and I haven’t played it in years, I’ll consider being a capitalist…and using the profit to buy more music, of course. I’m happy to report that I never wore it, and when I sold that set (again for a very nice profit) it included everything. The other “Beat The Boots” box came with a beret. It’s one thing if a t-shirt is packaged as an add-on for a retail exclusive, but when it’s part of the actual package I would most likely keep it in mint condition. Sorry I couldn’t be of more help, but Elvis’ catalog is so sprawling and there have been so many releases & re-releases that it’s hard to keep track of (and I’m not an obsessive fan…just a passionate one). It’s his first steps after the Comeback Special, prior to the jumpsuits & over-the-top theatrics that started around 1972 (which I love, but many people find ridiculous). Not sure where I would recommend you going based on your appreciation of the acoustic segment of the ’68 Comeback Special, but “Elvis – That’s The Way It Is” (in any format) is a great listening & viewing experience. Prior to that they used really bad noise-reducing technology that removed hiss as well as all the high-end. I will say to avoid any Elvis CDs pressed before the mid-90s. ![]() ![]() There are probably some shorter (and cheaper) collections of the different eras of his career to be found, but since I have those box sets I’ve never felt the need to search for them. I also recently got the 3-CD box set of “Elvis At Stax” which is excellent but likely more than a casual fan needs. Those are the basis of my Elvis collection, and from there I’ve also gotten a number of live recordings from the ’70s (my favorite era of his career, with that amazing band) as well as a 2-CD collection of his soundtrack recordings and another 2-CD set of his gospel recordings. I realize that’s a tall order, but I’m wondering if those aren’t as expensive as they used to be. I think new music is more easily digested in small packages and this is the best way to go if you are new to Buddy Holly.ĥ/5 stars all the way, I still listen to this all the time.įor me, the best initial Elvis purchases are the three 5-CD box sets on RCA/BMG, each one covering a different decade. Buy this first, check out some Buddy Holly, and once you’ve digested these songs, move onto the bigger picture. There are better and more complete compilations out there, but not at the price that this series sells for. It’s just one of the greatest songs ever written, period. The CD closes with “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore”, a Paul Anka song featuring Buddy backed by orchestra and acoustic guitar. “Think It Over”, by Buddy and the Crickets is an old fashioned rock and roll song with a nice big grand piano, completely fun. “Rave On” is very much in the same mold, completely memorable and toe-tapping. Meanwhile, “Oh, Boy!” is full of joie de vivre, Buddy leading the charge gleefully. “Words of Love” is still a masterpiece, using the then-new technique of double tracking the lead vocal. From “Not Fade Away” to “It Doesn’t Matter Anymore”, and of course the classic “Everyday”, this is a CD to listen to start-to-finish with nothing to skip. Every song is amazing, not a weak one in the bunch. ![]() This one is pretty near-perfect for a quick starter set. In this case I think it’s worth spending money on. 20th Century Masters are budget priced, limited to 10-12 songs, and brief running times. With an artist like Buddy Holly, it’s much less about albums and more about his singles. That’s mainly because I am a believer in buying the albums, not the greatest hits. Normally I rank all of these 20th Century Masters CDs as 2 stars across the board. A 2013 study from the Harvard School of Public Health found that while a greater consumption of certain whole fruits is significantly associated with a lower risk of Type 2 diabetes, consuming fruit juice is associated with a higher risk - a finding that some experts began citing as a reason to avoid cleanses. “It’s soda without the bubbles.” While fruit on its own contains fiber to slow the absorption of sugar into the bloodstream, fiberless juices can cause blood sugar spikes. Frank Lipman, whose own probiotic-heavy, juice-free cleanse is popular with celebrities. “A lot of juice cleanses are loaded with sugar because there’s too much fruit in the juices - it’s extremely unhealthy,” says Be Well founder Dr. BluePrint started selling juices in 2007. And as quality slipped, many cleansers realized that drinking only juice for several days isn’t actually that healthy. ![]() Fruit-laden blends meant to appeal to a broader audience began to saturate the market, while new pressure pasteurization techniques also allowed companies to extend their drinks’ shelf lives - past the point of good taste. “There a lot of money to be made, and there are a lot of people who realized that,” says Sakoutis. “, I’m going to drink juice, I’m going to pay someone way too much money and I’m going to lose 20 pounds! And all these mysterious toxins are going to leave my body, and I’m going to be purified!”īut as cleanses became more popular, some brands began cutting corners and the magic began to wear off. “At the beginning, this was nirvana,” says Joshua Rosenthal, founder of the NYC-based Institute for Integrative Nutrition. Organic Avenue, then a raw foods store, started packaging its own cleanses soon after, followed by Salma Hayek’s Cooler Cleanse in 2008, in partnership with Juice Generation’s Eric Helms. Their first fans, mostly moms from Connecticut, would either visit the kitchen to pick up their hand-packed cleanses or order a bike delivery from founder Zoe Sakoutis, who left the company in 2014. In 2007, BluePrint began selling six-packs of vegetable and fruit juices meant for three-day fasts out of a tiny Tribeca kitchen. ![]() The ultra-crunchy have been juicing for decades, but liquid cleanses entered the mainstream in 2006 when Beyoncé used the Master Cleanse to drop 20 pounds for her performance in “Dreamgirls.” The not-so-crunchy took note, mixing up their own pitchers of lemon juice, cayenne, maple syrup and water. When Sorah Kim moved from Texas to New York in 2011, the then-22-year-old started in on a series of juice cleanses. New York’s favorite health trend has quietly evaporated, in favor of nourishing hot drinks and meals that require chewing. Juice Press now offers cleanses made up of whole foods and has a variety of fat-filled coconut milk drinks. Organic Avenue, which sold glass jars of juice to moneyed moms, closed in 2015, reopened and closed again last year. Six years later, cleansing seems outdated and even dangerous. ‘I had a lot of energy, but now that I know more about nutrition, I think it was mostly the sugars that were doing that to me.’ Celebs such as Blake Lively and Gwyneth Paltrow were spotted toting a green bottle around the city, and there seemed to be a juice bar on every block. New Yorkers dutifully gagged down pressed spinach and celery, skipping meals in favor of a plastic bottle of green liquid. Subsisting on a half-dozen juices per day was believed to help shed weight, cure cravings, clear up skin, nix bloating, improve sleep and more. ![]() BluePrint had just been acquired by Hain Celestial, Juice Press was expanding like mad and California’s Suja Juice was democratizing the pricey trend by popping up in grocery stores.
